This sacred hill is and always was the most imortant place of the city – during history as well as in the presence are all visitors enchanted by this place that stands above the city. During the classical period (450-330 B.C.) three important temples were erected on the ruins of earlier ones: the Parthenon, the Erechtheion, and the Temple of Nike as well as the „Propylaea“ - the monumental entrance to the sacred area. |
The most important monument of the ancient Greece was Parthenon – a temple dedicated and sacred to patron of the city to the godess Athena Parthenos. The temple is built in doric style almost exclusively of pentelic marble and used to hide inside the cult statue of Athena made by the most famous greek sculptor – Phedias. The temple was unfortuantely damaged by Venetians in 1687. Later it lost its remaining statues when Lord Elgin bought them from Turks and sold to British Museum.
Heliaea (law court) as well as Royal Stoa where the places where the trial with Socrates was held after which he was executed in 399 BC.
The great advantage is that Plaka is compared to most of Athens mainly pedestrian area and mainly preserved place which can show you how Athens used to look until the half of the last century before the old neo-classical buildings where tore down and modern urbanization has started which has changed the face of the city to the state where it is now.
