 ACROPOLIS

 

Acropolis

This sacred hill is and always was the most imortant place of the city – during history as well as in the presence are all visitors enchanted by this place that stands above the city.

During the classical period (450-330 B.C.) three important temples were erected on the ruins of earlier ones: the Parthenon, the Erechtheion, and the Temple of Nike as well as the „Propylaea“ - the monumental entrance to the sacred area.

 

The most important monument of the ancient Greece was Parthenon – a temple dedicated and sacred to patron of the city to the godess Athena Parthenos. The temple is built in doric style almost exclusively of pentelic marble and used to hide inside the cult statue of Athena made by the most famous greek sculptor – Phedias. The temple was unfortuantely damaged by Venetians in 1687. Later it lost its remaining statues when Lord Elgin bought them from Turks and sold to British Museum.

 

 

ANCIENT AGORA

 

Agora Athens

The ancient Agora was the heart of the city – the center of political, commercial, cultural and social center of Athens. Originaly a burial and residential area slowly developed into the public center. This „park style“ excavation place set below the Acropolis offers a beautiful ambience for a walk through the history.

Hephaistos Temple (also known as Theseion) is the dominant of Agora – a doric temple once sacred to Hephaistos and Athena (whose idol statues once stood inside) set on the Kolonos Agoraios hill. This beautiful preserved monument from 449 BC as well as the others in Agora is one of the Athens must-see.

Heliaea (law court) as well as Royal Stoa where the places where the trial with Socrates was held after which he was executed in 399 BC.

 

  AREOPAGUS HILL

 

AREOPAGUS hill Athens

"The Hill of Ares" - this rocky hill adjacent to famous Acropolis is believed to be the place where the first judicial court ever was held. In the legends here Ares stood in a trial for murder (from which was acquitted) – the tradition of judicial place continued here through whole history.

Probably most famous person who stood here and explained his teachings was St. Paul while he has stayed in Greece.

 

 

PLAKA

Romantic Plaka Athens

The district of Plaka is the most charming and adored district of Athens. This old district at the foot of Acropolis hill used to be workers neighbourhood and slowly became the most demanded, expensive and visited areas of the city. With its pictoresque narrow streets, tavernas and shops is one of the most beautiful and charming place where to stay or which to visit.

 

The great advantage is that Plaka is compared to most of Athens mainly pedestrian area and mainly preserved place which can show you how Athens used to look until the half of the last century before the old neo-classical buildings where tore down and modern urbanization has started which has changed the face of the city to the state where it is now.

 

MONASTIRIKI

 

Monastiraki Athens

Monastiriki ("Small Monastery") is another preserved historical district of Athens - a neighbouring district to Plaka with its famous flea market set at Monastiriki sq. This area is a very popular place where to go shopping not only for tourists but also for Greeks. Its flea market offeres different types of goods for sale incl. jewlery, furs, brass, museum reprints, books, jackets… etc.

 

Monastiraki is also very popular place where to go with friends for coffea, lunch or dinner. Many tavernas offers great scale and quality of traditional greek food and offers unforgettable atmosphere.

 

PSYRRI

Aegean Islands

The district of Psyrri used to be one of the Athens’s most run-down neighbourhoods consisting of factories and warehouses. The Psyrri ballanced somewhere between workers and artistic district – often called Soho of Athens. This area has created it unique and charming atmosphere which can be very different to the other typical Athen’s neighbourghoods.

 

Mainly in past 20 years the neighbourghood achieved to become one of the most popular and trendy place for night life with often considered best bars, pubs as well as restaurants. Everynight hundreds of places offer you great scale of enjoyment.

 

 

LYCABETTUS HILL

Lycabettus hill Athens

Lycabettus is a forested limestone rock a hill that you can not miss - beside the Acropolis this is the dominant of the area offering unforgettable view of the whole city. There is a small white church of St. George set on the peak of the hill which creates an other specific sights of the city. There is also famous Lycabettus theatre at the hill too which is a very popular place where concerts and different cultural events are held. The best was how to reach Lycabettus is to take a furnicular which will easily get you to the top.

 

At the foot of the hill there is a famous district of Kolonaki – a hilly often called „posh“ district full of famous shops, clubs and restaurants.
